My creative interests lie in land art, photography, painting, printmaking and poetry.
I have always had an interest in art and as a child I very much enjoyed illustrating stories and poems. On leaving school I attended Amersham College of Art and Design on the BTEC National Diploma course, studying drawing, painting, illustration, graphics, 3D and photography. Following this I studied ‘A’ level art at Buckinghamshire College of Further Education. I have pursued art since then mainly as a hobby. I have also trained in traditional signwriting and Tibetan thangka painting. I am currently studying part-time at Aberystwyth University for the Certificate of Higher Education: Art and Design.
At the moment I am mostly making Land Art, which I love because it’s very ‘hands in’. You have your hands in the sand and the soil, in the sea and the river, and in the wood and the leaves. Making art with what is found in a place roots you into it. To take what nature has given and arrange it into new patterns and forms, something original and fragile, helps us to appreciate and understand it. To me this feels like the most immediate way to be co-creating with God/dess. We take what they have left for us and make something more of it. The temporary quality of the work illustrates the ever changing nature of everything. Work on the beach is washed away by the tide; work in the woods decays and is overgrown, reclaimed by its surroundings. Nature is ultimately in charge. My work hours are determined by the the tides and the weather. My favourite Land Artists are Chris Drury, Andy Goldsworthy and Richard Long.
From spending so much time playing in nature I have become very interested in photographing it just as it is. Most of it's still too alive to be played with! It's just so beautiful, and always changing. I want to capture every passing flower, wave, sunset and season.
I also paint, and this work is mostly inspired by my spiritual thoughts and feelings. I've just begun to do figurative painting, of goddess-like women, inspired by Celtic spirituality, myth and legend, and by Wales’ magical landscape. Previous work was abstract, coming from deeper within my subconscious. My work is a practice of expanding the connection between my material and spiritual worlds. My favourite painters are Burne-Jones, Waterhouse, Mucha and Susan Seddon Boulet.
I have recently done some printmaking which is based around Celtic knotwork designs. I am interested in how the patterns of the designs reflect the interconnected nature of the elements of the universe.
I also write poetry, which is a fusion of myth, magic, spirit, romance and the land. My favourite poets are Keats, Tennyson, Adrian Henri, Brian Patten and Hilary Llewellyn Williams.
